Sophie Dickens is an internationally renowned contemporary British sculptor whose
works are distributed all over the world.
Her classical training in drawing and the deep knowledge of her form, also thanks to
the degree from the prestigious Courtauld Institute of Art in London, allow her to
reduce and separate to create works that move in all directions. Whether it's a quick
sketch or a monumental sculpture, her work is full of dynamism.
Through meticulous anatomical studies, she Sophie constructs armor by welding
iron rods like skeletal designs onto which she begins to bind specially made pieces of
wood from oak and chestnut planks.
Using fluid dynamics to understand the nature of convex and concave shapes, she
creates muscle movements similar to the classic Eadweard Muybridge studies that
influenced her, eventually bringing together all the segments and creating a
coherent kinematic sensation of bones, muscles and tendons.
With a natural ability, she gives life and character to her work, creating monumental
sculptures full of passion and vitality, in which the internal mechanisms of the body
and mind explode through the skin and form the outer shell.
Sophie Dickens' creations and sculptures reflect a modern primitivism, often with
elongated arms and legs that create creatures full of strength and movement. In
complete contrast to Giacometti's iconic forms, whose frail forms appear solemn
and almost made of ash, Sophie's work is boldly Amazonian, as if her creatures have
uprooted themselves from fertile soils. Her work often contains themes of tragedy,
but there is a strong sense of struggle and survival.
Sophie's subjects revolve mainly around nature, mythology, the elements and
humanity. They are full of poetry with lyrical forms and emotional poses.
She inherited the family's ability to evoke the senses, as her great-grandfather
Charles Dickens was so capable of, yet she Sophie can speak to anyone without the
need for words.
